The MOT Test

When does a car require an MOT?

The first MOT on a car should take place when the vehicle is 3 years old – please note that this could be different if this has 9 seats or more and/or is a taxi. An MOT tests the important elements of your vehicle to ensure they meet the minimum legal requirements, you should continue to make sure that your car maintains this standard as a minimum at all times. As the registered owner of the vehicle, it is your responsibility to ensure the vehicle is examined every 12 months.

You must get an MOT for your vehicle by:

  • The third anniversary of its registration
  • The anniversary of its last MOT, if it’s over 3 years old

Please note that some vehicles need to be tested from one year old – see DVSA website for full details.

What our customers think

Called up with an emergency flat tyre. The guys sourced me one and got it up to the garage by the afternoon! Couldn’t have been more helpful and would recommend anyone wanting help with their car to check JS Motors!

Amy Sellers - April 2018

I booked my car in for an MOT in July 2017. I had bought the car from a small dealer who had MOT'd it the year before, with 'no advisories'. Gary called me through and showed me the potentially life-threatening faults on the car, and was visibly angry that I had been duped, putting mine and my young daughter's lives at risk. He spent considerable time with me not only on that day, but also shortly afterwards when I had found a replacement car. He said to tell him before buying and he would research the MOT history for me. This, he did. Since then, my trust has been entirely with JS Motors. My 'new' car has had minimal repairs carried out by Gary and his team; one such repair only required a tightening of a nut and a replacement bulb. I was charged a nominal fee for this, as they operate on an entirely honest basis. Their honesty is second to none that I have ever encountered. They are friendly, lots of fun, very efficient, and 100% trustworthy. I won't go anywhere else! *Customer advisory - they like cakes!* :-D

Jo E. - March 2018
